MATILDA BOOK CLUB March Wrap Up

In March, we discussed the fertile and compassionate story of a small farming town in the Red River Valley of North Dakota, during the financial crisis of 2008. In Louise Erdrich’s The Mighty Red, beside the mighty red Colorado river, the lives of local farmers, sugar beet haulers, factory workers, bookshop owners, and young lovers play out in the aftermath of a tragedy. Kismet, an 18-year-old with First Nations heritage, fends off several proposals of marriage from the handsome jock, Gary, but as Kismet & Gary's lives become more entwined, darker histories unravel to do with hauntings, environmental annihilation, and systemic poverty. And yet this book is funny, vibrant, and rich with character and place. We marvelled at Erdrich's ability to casually embed significant topics such as land theft and the destruction caused by chemical farming to native plants and foods, while investing her characters with agency and imagination. Many of us fell in love with the humanity of the characters, while others thought there were perhaps too many people to keep track of & a bit too much going on generally. We discussed form, tension, love triangles, bank robberies, generosity on the page, and the stunning writing of a mother and daughter relationship. MOLLY

RED DOOR BOOK CLUB March wrap up

This month we chatted about Jessica Anthony's slim novel The Most, the story of a marriage on the brink. One of my favourite things about our discussion was how, despite many people initially feeling that the novel lacked "meat" or depth, over the course of the hour together as we unpacked it and followed threads of thought, we discovered there was actually more to this story brimming below the surface (just like the pool in the story...).

Our discussions honed in on the characters’ avoidance in life and relationships and how they sabotaged themselves by making choices that seemed safe - such as Kathleen choosing to give up her ambitions to become a professional tennis player because she was afraid she wouldn’t be as good as her idol - but then bristled inside the cages they’d built for themselves. Many people enjoyed the structure of the novel unfolding like a tennis match, with each chapter revealing Kathleen and Virgil’s unreliability as new information shed light on the previous chapter’s lies and distortions. Our lively conversations ranged from narcissistic personality types to the symbolism of the lonely dog Laika hurtling through space. Also, we discovered that the word "most" in Polish (pronounced "moss-t") means bridge. Ah, how it all suddenly made sense! ROSE

KIDS BOOK CLUB 2024 Wrap Up

What a joy it has been to welcome our voracious younger readers into the bookshop after hours for our kids book club programs in 2024. Each month we are engaged in thoughtful, funny conversations about the books we’ve read, the parts we’ve liked and disliked, characters that feel like our friends and the ways we wish endings had turned out differently. Many of our readers have been challenged to try new things, as have we, choosing books that we might otherwise not have picked up from the shelf. We can’t wait to meet again in 2025, and we especially can’t wait to share some truly awesome books with you! Wishing all our bookclubbers a very Merry Christmas and a safe and joyful summer holiday Kasey and Rosie Rosie
